About
I am a strategic leader with over a decade of experience driving institutional research, strategic planning, university rankings, and digital transformation in higher education. My expertise lies in aligning data, people, and strategy to support institutional growth, operational efficiency, global visibility, and student success.
In my current role as Director of Planning and Institutional Intelligence at Walter Sisulu University (WSU), I lead institution-wide initiatives in enrolment planning, strategic execution, institutional intelligence, university rankings, and HEMIS compliance. I am responsible for WSU’s participation in global ranking systems, including the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, where the university achieved a significant milestone by being ranked among the top five universities in South Africa. I oversee the integration of data analytics, evidence frameworks, and planning systems that inform executive decision-making, strengthen governance, and enable long-term institutional sustainability. My leadership is focused on building robust, data-informed ecosystems that translate institutional performance into measurable national and global impact.
In 2025, I served as the Research Lead for the G20 EMPOWER Best Practices Playbook, where I was responsible for guiding the research design, data collection, analysis, and synthesis that informed the final publication. The Playbook was formally recognised in the G20 South African Leaders’ Declaration, positioning higher education as a key contributor to global dialogues on gender equity, economic participation, and evidence-based policy.
Previously, I served as Director of Institutional Planning at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), where I led academic planning and coordinated institution-wide strategic planning processes. I was responsible for the timely and accurate submission of HEMIS data, ensuring regulatory compliance and securing government subsidy funding critical to institutional viability. I also headed the Strategic Analytics and Business Intelligence function, leveraging advanced data systems to support evidence-based decision-making and foster cross-functional collaboration.

AI, hybrid learning, and digital disruption dominate talk at conferences and strategy meetings—but awareness isn’t the same as readiness.
Many universities are making surface-level changes while clinging to outdated models. As Peter Drucker said, “The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence itself, but acting with yesterday’s logic.”
In my latest piece, I unpack what real transformation looks like:
-
The real gap isn’t tech—it’s culture, agility, and leadership
-
Four future student personas and what they actually need
-
The essential skills every graduate should have by 2030
-
A roadmap to becoming truly future-ready
-
Why transformation is a choice, not a fate
Are you seeing these student types emerge on your campus? What’s driving—or blocking—real change where you are?
While many universities focus on AI in research, teaching, and operations, one critical area remains overlooked: AI ethics in governance, community engagement, and leadership.
After completing the TRREE (Training and Resources in Research Ethics Evaluation) programme, I’m more convinced than ever—ethical foresight must be embedded in digital strategies, not bolted on.
We need to ask:
-
Are our digital systems reinforcing inequality or fostering inclusion?
-
Are communities shaping the AI tools that affect them?
-
Should universities lead in ethical AI governance—not just comply?
The UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI reminds us: human rights, transparency, inclusion, accountability, and sustainability aren’t checkboxes—they’re strategic imperatives.
It’s time to move ethics from the margins of policy to the core of strategy. Universities must become ethical AI architects, not just adopters.
In this article, I reflect on insights shared at the SAAIR- Southern African Association for Institutional Research Quality Assurance Forum hosted by the University of Johannesburg, where I explored what ethical, human-AI collaboration could mean for academic planning, quality assurance, and the future of access.
We talk a lot about transformation. But if we’re not intentional, AI could simply automate the same exclusions we’ve spent decades trying to fix.
This piece covers:
-
Rethinking the 3–4 year degree
-
Modular, verified learning via blockchain
-
AI’s value in planning, QA, and student support
-
The risk of bias, opacity, and imported tech
-
A practical roadmap for ethical implementation
"The future isn’t being written in code. It’s being written in our choices."
Let’s build tools—and systems—that work for people.
As we rethink student enrolment strategies for sustainable universities, we must move beyond counting enrolments and start nurturing success.
On Nelson Mandela Day, I had the honour of presenting at Nelson Mandela University on the topic: From Access to Completion: Rethinking Postgraduate Attraction, Enrolment, and Success.
A few key reflections:
-
Access without success entrenches inequality.
-
Supervision requires more than a PhD; it demands mentorship, empathy, and skill.
-
Funding gaps at the Honours level are shutting out the majority.
-
Not all universities must be “giraffes”; let’s embrace differentiation like in nature: springboks, elephants, and all.
Let’s build ecosystems that support and graduate students, not pipelines that leak potential.
“Completion is not just performance. It’s justice.”
The 2025 UN SDG Report makes it clear: none of the Sustainable Development Goals are on track. Yet despite the data, real change remains elusive.
In my environmental science studies, I explored what drives people to shift their energy habits. It wasn’t tech or awareness—it was social influence. What people think others expect from them makes all the difference.
This insight scales up. SDG dashboards help us see where we are, but insight isn’t impact. Progress demands global accountability, shared norms, and cultural pressure.
History shows us—movements like the end of apartheid weren’t driven by stats, but by collective moral will.
In short:
-
Dashboards are vital—but not enough
-
We need a culture that expects and rewards change
-
Sustainable behaviours must become the norm, not the exception
Data tells us where we stand. Behaviour shapes where we go.
On my journey through digital transformation, I encountered McKinsey’s Rewired model—built to help businesses scale AI and innovation with precision.
But what if we applied this enterprise playbook to universities?
Higher ed is under strain:
-
Legacy systems that no longer serve
-
Disjointed digital initiatives
-
Rising expectations from students and employers
-
Limited resources to scale innovation meaningfully
In my latest article, "Rethinking Digital Transformation in Higher Education Through the Rewired Lens," I explore how universities can adopt six core capabilities—from agile delivery to digital leadership—to move beyond pilots and toward full-scale transformation.
I also connect these ideas to the EDUCAUSE framework, offering a practical roadmap—not just theory.
It’s time higher education borrowed the boldness of enterprise. Let’s rewire our institutions with the structure and ambition transformation truly demands.
This article explores the future of higher education in South Africa, urging a shift beyond traditional metrics to meet new realities.
Key focus areas include:
-
Financial sustainability in the face of budget cuts and rising tuition
-
Curriculum renewal to align with a rapidly changing job market
-

The need to balance innovation with urgent social challenges like unemployment and inequality
South Africa’s universities must evolve—not just to stay relevant, but to drive meaningful change.
This article explores how Operations and Supply Chain Management principles can enhance the management of higher education institutions.
By focusing on:
-
Quality inputs (like student readiness)
-
Accurate forecasting (of enrolment, retention, and graduate outcomes)
-
Effective supply chain practices (from admissions to graduation)
...institutions can boost both efficiency and impact.
The piece highlights initiatives such as the UNIZULU Integrated Experience in STEM and Siyaphumelela 1.0, which aim to improve student success.
I argue that applying these principles can help tackle persistent challenges—like dropout rates and graduate unemployment—and drive a more equitable, data-informed, and responsive higher education system.
This article examines the intersection of unemployment and higher education in South Africa against the backdrop of the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey, which shows a rising unemployment rate.
While access to higher education has improved, deep inequities remain—especially for disadvantaged students—driving high dropout rates and limiting post-graduation opportunities.
Key themes include:
-
Curriculum renewal to build critical thinking, digital skills, and entrepreneurship
-
Transformation and inclusion across institutions
-
Education quality, financial sustainability, and infrastructure
-
Research, innovation, student support, governance, and internationalisation
I argue that aligning higher education with these priorities is essential to reducing graduate unemployment and dropouts—building a system that’s both equitable and future-ready.
This article explores the far-reaching impact of digital transformation across industries and organizations.
It examines the integration of digital technologies, data analytics, and connectivity—driven by innovations like mobile internet, cloud computing, AI, and big data—and how these forces are reshaping business and society.
Key themes include:
-
The rise of digital services and platform ecosystems that fuel innovation and efficiency
-
The critical role of leadership in navigating transformation, with a focus on adaptability, innovation, tech fluency, collaboration, and customer-centricity
-
The need for ethical leadership and self-management to ensure responsible, sustainable change
Ultimately, successful digital transformation requires more than tools—it demands visionary, values-driven leadership.
This article explores the critical role of emotional intelligence (EI) in leadership—especially in the context of digital transformation.
As technologies like AI, big data, and the Internet of Things reshape industries, leaders face new complexities: managing change, driving collaboration, and navigating ethical challenges.
The article argues that leaders with strong EI—marked by self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills—are better equipped to:
-
Build trust
-
Manage resistance to change
-
Lead high-performing, adaptable teams
It also acknowledges challenges in measuring EI and stresses the need to balance it with technical expertise.
To develop EI in leadership, the article recommends:
-
Structured training programs
-
Encouraging continuous feedback
-
Creating inclusive, emotionally aware workplaces
In today’s digital age, EI isn’t optional—it’s a leadership imperative.
This article examines the evolving landscape of higher education in South Africa, tracing its historical development and the growing competition among the country's 26 public universities.
Key trends include:
-
The rise of micro-credentials and skills badges as flexible, job-relevant alternatives to traditional degrees
-
A growing emphasis on work-based learning and apprenticeships to boost practical experience and employability
-
The potential of hybrid learning, powered by technologies like virtual reality, to expand access and reduce reliance on physical campuses
The article argues that to stay relevant and sustainable, South Africa’s universities must invest in strategic planning, change management, and tech integration.
The future of higher education lies in adaptability, relevance, and bold innovation.
